چکیده

Nasal cavity is an important component of respiration system for the various physiological functions (Elad et al., 2008; Lee, 2010). Due to its complicated geometry, flow patterns are difficult to visualize inside 3D spaces. By adopting the ISOMAP algorithm (Tenenbaum et al., 2000) implemented in Matlab, the surface of a nasal cavity, together with characteristic lines serving as visual markers were unwrapped into a normalized uv-domain (where u and v are coordinates of a 2D space) to present a complete view

Application of Surface Mapping to Visualize Wall Shear Stress and Particles deposition in a Realistic Human Nasal Cavity

Nasal cavity is an important component of respiration system for the various physiological functions (Elad et al., 2008; Lee, 2010). By using a commercial CFD software Ansys-Fluent and a surface mapping software Unfold3D, wall shear stress (WSS) distribution and particle deposition patterns on the nasal cavity wall were simulated and transformed into a normalized UV domain (where U and V denote...

Impacts of Fluid Dynamics Simulation in Study of Nasal Airflow Physiology and Pathophysiology in Realistic Human Three-Dimensional Nose Models

During the past decades, numerous computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, constructed from CT or MRI images, have simulated human nasal models. As compared to rhinomanometry and acoustic rhinometry, which provide quantitative information only of nasal airflow, resistance, and cross sectional areas, CFD enables additional measurements of airflow passing through the nasal cavity that help vis...

Micro Particles Transport and Deposition in Realistic Geometry of Human Upper Airways

Realistic geometry of human upper airways from mouth to the end of trachea was reconstructed by implementing the CT-Scan images of a male subject.   A computational model for analyzing the airflow in the airways was developed and several simulations were performed.  To capture the anisotropy of the inhaled airflow in the upper airways, the Reynolds stress transport model of turbulence was used ...

Boundary Shear Stress in a Trapezoidal Channel

This paper focuses on a hydraulic radius separation approach used to calculate the boundary shear stress in terms of bed and wall shear stress proposed in a trapezoidal channel. The average bed and sidewall shear stress in smooth trapezoidal open channels are derived after using Guo & Julien (2005) early equations taking a part of an investigation to cover both rectangular and trapezoidal chann...

CFD Study of the Air Flow Field and Particle Deposition in the Human Nasal Cavity

The nasal cavity is a main part of the human upper airway, and it has the important functions of respiration, heating and humidifying the inhaled air. The properties of the air flow in the nasal cavity may contribute to the occurrence of respiratory disease. In addition, particles are filtered by the nasal cavity. This function prevents toxic particles to enter into the human body, but it also ...
